By 7p.m. the fires seem to be abating. Two helicopters arrived to continue to douse the flames which were slowly spreading towards a petrol station near the new hotel and to houses on Lagada.

FIRE ON MAKRY GIALOS HILLS

Fire on hills over Makry Gialos, threatens resort.

ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΔΑΣΙΚΗ ΠΥΡΚΑΓΙΑ ΣΤΟ ΜΑΚΡΥ ΓΙΑΛΟ ΣΗΤΕΙΑΣ.

Μεγάλη δασική πυρκαγιά βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη αυτή τη στιγμή 17.00 στη περιφέρια των Λιθινών Μακρύ Γιαλού.
Λόγω των ισχυρών ανέμων 8 μποφώρ, απειλούνται εκτάσεις με θερμοκήπια και κατωκοιμένες περιοχές, τα χωριά Πιλαλήματα και Λαγκάδα και το τουριστικό θέρετρο Ανάληψη Μακρύ Γιαλού.
Θα επανέλθουμε με νεώτερα.


At about 1 .30 today on the beach we all saw smoke up in the hills, it grew worse and by 2.30 we heard the first fire engines , soon followed by a white helicopter carrying a large water bucket, to douse the flames , we can see the flames licking the hills. Dimitri thinks that the water is not enough to quell the flames and is almost exploding in a ball of steam sending burning debris further down the hill towards the houses, and the beach resort.




















Now at four thirty the helicopter retreated as it was unable to operate in such high winds , these winds started late yesterday evening and haven't slowed all day. Many flip flops are flying solo over Makry Gialos and will never be seen again.
The fire has now spread to many area's threatening olive groves and greenhouses , we can see the fllames on the far left of the hills , but areas of acrid black smoke can be seen comming further down the valley. Dimitri belives the small village of Pilalimata and Lagada, is in danger of being engulfed in the fire.
From the vantage piont of the beach the smoke is getting very thick from the hilltop right down to the sea, past Dragons Cave.
