SUMMER 2008 ENTERTAINMENT ORGANISED BY MAKRI GIALOS COUNCIL

Agios Stephanos Festival

Last night the festival at Agios Stephanos was a huge success. At least 200 hundred people attended the festival, and were all entertained by traditional Cretan music. There was lots of dancing and everybody said it was an excellent night, which carried on until the early hours of the morning.

The Makri Gialos Council has also organised many other events for the month of August.

2 August - Beach Party
With famous Greek singer Natalia Germanou. Starting at 9pm at the Makri Gialos harbour.

3 August - A Happy Night With Clowns
Entertainment for children at 7pm at the Makri Gialos harbour.

7 August - Traditional Tastes and Music
A night of Cretan folklore and music at 8pm at the Makri Gialos harbour.

9 August - A night for young people
A music night with a mixture of Greek, Hip Hop and Pop music at 7pm at the Makri Gialos harbour.

17 August - Big Greek Music Concert
Greek music with the very popular Greek singers Giorgos Ydraios and Sofia Michailidi at the National Park at Koutsouras at 9pm.

FIRE ON MAKRY GIALOS HILLS UPDATE, AND MORE NEWS

There has been much happening lately in Makry Gialos. On Thursday everyone's attention was focused on the fires that sprung up unexpectedly, which were fanned by strong winds in the area around Pilamata and Lagada.

The fire crews were quickly on the scene, however, due to inaccessability of some areas, helicopters with water buckets were called in an attempt to control further spreading of the fires.

Despite all attempts, the fires were difficult to control, resulting in loss of a few greenhouses, olive trees and farm land. All houses were safe, except for a few with minor damage. The fires now seem to be extinguished.



New Hotel Opening

After months of construction work, the new hotel complex, named Mikri Poli (Small Town) has its grand opening today. It has prime location at the top end of Analipsi and has its own private beach and facilities. It is expected to accomodate mainly German, Italian and Austrian tourists.


Festival

Tonight is also the annual music festival at Agios Stephanos. A good turnout is expected, with music from a top Greek musician.

By 7p.m. the fires seem to be abating. Two helicopters arrived to continue to douse the flames which were slowly spreading towards a petrol station near the new hotel and to houses on Lagada.

FIRE ON MAKRY GIALOS HILLS

Fire on hills over Makry Gialos, threatens resort.

ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΔΑΣΙΚΗ ΠΥΡΚΑΓΙΑ ΣΤΟ ΜΑΚΡΥ ΓΙΑΛΟ ΣΗΤΕΙΑΣ.

Μεγάλη δασική πυρκαγιά βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη αυτή τη στιγμή 17.00 στη περιφέρια των Λιθινών Μακρύ Γιαλού.
Λόγω των ισχυρών ανέμων 8 μποφώρ, απειλούνται εκτάσεις με θερμοκήπια και κατωκοιμένες περιοχές, τα χωριά Πιλαλήματα και Λαγκάδα και το τουριστικό θέρετρο Ανάληψη Μακρύ Γιαλού.
Θα επανέλθουμε με νεώτερα.


At about 1 .30 today on the beach we all saw smoke up in the hills, it grew worse and by 2.30 we heard the first fire engines , soon followed by a white helicopter carrying a large water bucket, to douse the flames , we can see the flames licking the hills. Dimitri thinks that the water is not enough to quell the flames and is almost exploding in a ball of steam sending burning debris further down the hill towards the houses, and the beach resort.




















Now at four thirty the helicopter retreated as it was unable to operate in such high winds , these winds started late yesterday evening and haven't slowed all day. Many flip flops are flying solo over Makry Gialos and will never be seen again.
The fire has now spread to many area's threatening olive groves and greenhouses , we can see the fllames on the far left of the hills , but areas of acrid black smoke can be seen comming further down the valley. Dimitri belives the small village of Pilalimata and Lagada, is in danger of being engulfed in the fire.
From the vantage piont of the beach the smoke is getting very thick from the hilltop right down to the sea, past Dragons Cave.

A good selection of snacks and drinks are available as well as ice creams,the tuna salad is the best to be found in Makrigialos.

We are οn the beach front by the small fishing harbour in the village of Makrigialos. Makrigialos, (Makrygialo, Makry Gialos, Μακρύ Γιαλός) is in the southeast part of the Island of Crete, 25 Km East of Ierapetra, and 35 Km South of Sitia town, in the Lassithi area.

Before Olympio became a cafe, it used to be a Kafeneio, a storehouse and after that in 1970's the home of our parents, until 1990. It is made of stone, built in 1936.
We renovated it and converted it to a cafe bar in 1996 with a nice terrace under the old tamarisk trees with a view of the bay and the Libyan Sea.

10 DAYS UNTIL GRAND OPENING OF NEW HOTEL "MIKRI POLI" ,MAKRIGIALOS, CRETA.

So far in Makrygialos village buisness has not been so good. With the opening of the new hotel Mikri Polis, we hope to encourage more life to the area. The new hotel beach is ready with sunbeds and umbrellas in place and there are four pool areas, three which are filled with water and one still under construction. There is a garden area within the hotel and many of the rooms have been completed. More work has still to be carried out around the restaurant and reception areas within what will be a beautiful complex when finished.
