Makry-Gialos in October
Our favourite month. Warm during the day, slightly cooler evenings. It is also the beginning of the "Kazanema" season. This is the traditional raki brewing (moonshine) festivities taking place in very basic legalised distilleries with plenty of traditional Cretan hospitality, music and fun
This year the Villia Village Hotel organise his own Raki Parties ( Kazanemata ) at 23, 24 and 25 of October.
Makry-Gialos, Crete: The official spelling
After many years with confusion and discussions about how you should spell the name of our town, we have finally got the solution.
We hope that everybody will start using this official spelling for "Makry-Gialos" village in Crete Island.
So there will not be any more confusion.

WE LOVE MAKRY-GIALOS BUT ........
We love Makry-gialos but unfortunately did not visit this year, because the only tour operator from the uk Kosmar cease to operate.
We found it too expensive to make our own arrangement.
The main reason the exchange rate and also the price people are charging for accommodation.
I think more people would come if people gave a good price on a week room rental and not charge high prices on a nightly basis.
Also another major downfall is the price on the taxi fare from the airport, which at the moment adds another £200 on the price of the holiday.
I wonder if the local people with property to rent and the people who provide a wonderful service in the food industry could not get together and try to solve some of these issues.
It would make it much easier for people to make their own arrangements and I am sure you would get more people visiting.
We are all suffering from the credit crunch, but I am sure if we tried to help each other until things improve we may well get through, you by keeping your business and us being able to still come and visit your wonderful Makry-gialos.
You have so much to offer.
We look forward to next year and hope to see you then.
Love to all
Chris + Ray Wales
The Summer is here, but the tourists have gone!
A view along the harbour beach front at 14.30 hrs (01.09.09). So if the folks are not on the beach and not in the bars, where are they?!!!
We have had another fabulous holiday in Makry Gialos and are, as always, sad that it has come to an end but we have our memories of all the great days on the beach, in the sea, the long, languid lunches in Cafe Olympio and the great meals in various restaurants at night. Check out the cocktails in Ilyos, the stifado in Archie's (Archipeligo) and Kleftiko in Botsalo amongst others.
Hope to see you all again next year.
Orrabest,
Iain & Angela McGregor.
Reporting in from Makry Gialos
From Link: http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1471
Although I'm aware that this is the Plakias forum I thought that one or two of you people might be interested to hear how life is in a simular place like Plak.
After not being able to sit on the beach because of the wind for 15 days of our 30 days holiday in july/august last year we had big doubts about where to go this year so I did a lot of research on other destinations on Crete.
I scanned the whole southcoast with Google Earth and first thought Mirtos might be a good alternative. One of you good people (I think it was Graeme) spoke very highly of Mirtos so at first we thought to give it a go but decided not to because it was perhaps a bit smallish for a 4 weeks holiday. We actually went there this year for the day and were glad we did not go there. It's a cute little place, very pretty but indeed to small for our liking, not much of a beach either.
So I scanned on and ended up in Makry Gialos (meaning long beach). From the air it looked very much like Plakias so I did some more research and found a Makry Gialos forum (nothing much, just a Tripadvisor thing, nothing as unique as this Plak forum)
One thing I noticed was that people speak of Mak in a simular away as people do about Plakias, very good atmosphere, very laid back, people going there year after year, the feeling that one stays with family rather than just renting an apartment aso, aso. ( and much more important: far less wind than in Plak!)
So Mak it was and believe me, we had one of the best holidays of our life. Only 2 1/2 days of strong wind!! Other than in Plakias the first row of buildings is right on the beach (apartments, bars, restaurants) and the road is behind it. Makes a big difference, one walks out of the building and is right on the beach, very fine golden sand, ideal to build sandcastles, very shallow sea so ideal for children (you must like them little buggers otherwise this is not the place for you!)
Once you rent an apartment you have beds and umbrella free of charge and if one is not in an apartment right on the beach all the bars and restaurants have their own beds so one just orders a drink and the beds are free of charge! Nice little harbour just a bit bigger than in Plak, unfortunately some motorized watersport but strictly a good 100 yards from the beach....plenty of restaurants to choose from and an atmosphere very simular like Plakias.
There is no far end for people that like to bounce balls on the water but plenty of secluded bays in de direct vicinity. Instead of the far end there is a big all in Swedish resort but it's not disturbing at all, they all stay there and some of them just come out in the evening to eat in one of the restaurants being fed up with the all in food I suppose Population: at least 50 % Greek families, 40 % British, a few French, German and Dutch and no East Europeans at all!
Enough to see and do in the surroundings, Sitia is a pretty place with remarkebly few tourists (dissapointment for the misses, no shops to speak of, very local) but with a beautiful boulevard. Going west, Ierapetra is not very interesting, a bit ugly bit of coast really, too many plastic greenhouses, yuk.We stayed at Villa Plori apartments, I reccomend highly! We did our shopping in the little supermarket nextdoor and the lovely people there gave us a present EVERYDAY!!!
1/2 litre of their own oliveoil, two beers, 2 cokes, a packet of figs, a meze dish, a raki bottle and 6 glasses, more oliveoil, 2 icecreams on the day that Poppy their daughter turned 8 and on and on, amazing and very moving, aahhh! Crete!!!Enough...just see....oh and remarkable thing, people love fancydress parties, see photograph, they have special parking lots for people in fancy dress:)
And ofcourse I have to mention Dimitri and his wife Hara of the Olympio bar, great place, great people, snail race every tuesday, very exciting! visit their website and you get the idea.
Bless you, Chris H.

Xerocampos and Kato Zakros
Why not hire a car and take a trip east to Xerocampos (about 2 hrs) through some beautiful scenery to some of the prettiest beaches in Crete.
Drive for a further 40 minutes on the new road to the Minoan palace at Kato Zakros (head through Xerocampos to Zakros). The scenery is stunning and far removed from the hustle and bustle of Makry-Gialos.

Sitia Airport, delayed?
The New Tourist Train
A 3-DAYS ISLAND-JUMP FROM Makry Gialos, CRETE TO KARPATHOS Island
Spending the holidays in quiet and peaceful Makrigalos is the equivalent of a nice holiday; a charming little village on the beach with great places to eat and drink, and relaxed and nice people. We’ve been here 3 times over the last year and we love it.
A change of scenery and seeing something new is never a bad thing.
We knew about the close proximity of the small of Island of Karpathos to Makrigialos, and talking to some locals confirmed our idea of going there to be a good one.
We thought the best way of travelling to Karpathos would be by boat, but discovered that the fastest and best way to go was by plane from Sitia airport.
That was the start of our trip to Karpathos.
We left for Sitia airport early on a Friday morning and had a fantastic flight, although it was very windy. Going in a small propeller airplane only a few hundred meters over the sea we could see the corals, the waves and the life of the ocean.
The first leg of the flight was 15 minutes to Kassos, a tiny little island very close to Karpathos.
Landing in Karpathos airport we found a taxi that took us to Pigadia, or Karpathos town. We drove through an interesting landscape with a green, rugged coastline and blue ocean. Arriving in Pigadia we found a beautiful little harbour with restaurants, bars, boats, people and white houses on the hills surrounding the harbour.
A bit of a Greek pearl we thought!
We walked around the town and saw that the area east of the town, by the beach, was one of many new hotels and apartments and the home of the much-criticized new Apollo hotel on the Island. At first glance this seemed to be the least authentic part of the town, the harbour being the genuine Karpathian part, but this turned out to be wrong. We discovered that the harbour – although pretty beyond comparison – was a tiring place at night, with employees in the restaurants and bars greeting us in English and Swedish, following us as we walked by and being rather annoying. In the more touristy part of the town, by the big hotels, we found it much more peaceful and the mood much more relaxed.
Finding a place to stay was no problem (middle of June) and the prices were ok as we paid between 35 and 40 euros a night for a double room with air conditioning.
We were advised to rent a car or a scooter to see the island and its many lovely beaches. We decided to rent a scooter for one day to go to one of the most idyllic beaches of the island, Kyra Panagia, but the most important place to go and see, for us and for most other visitors to Karpathos: Olympos.
Olympos is an old, small village built in the mountainside away from the coast with an interesting and very special architecture. We got on a boat and left Pigadia at 9 am, spent 90 minutes on the boat and arrived in Diafani, a small coastal town in the north of the island.
The sight of the village was stunning and became even more beautiful as we walked around the narrow paths and steps of the village.
It is a place living with tourism and although the village was so different from others the 4 hours spent there were enjoyed.
The trip back down to the harbour was somewhat scary on the narrow and steep roads but we did get down in one piece. We spent an hour in the village of Diafani, a disappointment due to all the people promoting their restaurants by running after us as we walked past. We then got on the boat to head back to Pigadia.
On the following day we got our rental scooter and drove off to spend the day in Kyra Panagia. The trip there was about 14 kilometres, the roads were good and the view as we got on the top to go down to the beach was amazing.
And so was the beach!
A small, white sandy beach with the clearest water ever! Bluish-green-aqua in colour with white stones on the bottom. Absolutely lovely!
The place and the day proved itself even better as we decided not to stop at the taverna by the beach but rather walk 150 metres up the road, to have lunch in a quiet and nice blue taverna. we were met by a very nice young girl, who served us the best Moussaka ever as well as a great salad, nice bread and ice-cold beer. Perfect.
We left Pigadia and Karpathos the next day and were again thrilled about the flight, this time back to Sitia and Makrigialos.
Apart from the rather pushy people in the restaurants in Pigadia and Diafani we loved the flight, the island and Kyra Panagia in particular.
We are already thinking about going again; we would then do Kassos (the tiny island before Karpathos) and Lefkos, a small village on the north (?) coast of Karpathos.
Thanks for telling us about the island and the flights there!
Best regards,
Morten & Maria
Makrigialos number one
Everybody wants to go to Crete from Norway, please read this Our meet with Makrigialos started on Sun Ving twenty years ago.
Now we most of the time stay in different apartments in the village. You meet friendly people and feel the greek atmosphere It is easy go on your own. You can still go with Sun Ving Book just the flight to Heraklion, pay a small amount to have buss both ways and when you arrive you leave the buss on (Makrygialos) Sun Ving.
From here you can easily have a taxie, be picked up by owner of the apartment you have rented or just walk On Olympio Bar`s page you will find several studio and apartments recommended Good prices and nice appartments.
You can also go with Appollo travel only flight ( also sell one way ticket ) and with Norwegians
This time we went to Heraklion with Apollo and Norwegion back to Norway ( paid only 30 E one way going back)
We use to rent a car from Motor Plan. They are very helpful. There is also a possibility to have
a bus from the airport to Lerapetra and from here to Makrigialos.
There are high quality on the roads and on your way you collect beutiful memories from the nature.
Down in Makrigialos and in Analipsi ( upper town ) there are several bars and tavernas The drinks and food are tasty and well done For sure, you never get sick from food here I just have to say, here in Makrigialos you can always feel well, and among the greek you feel comfortable, relaxed and happy.
Makrigialos is the best, hurry on and enjoy the greek

WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY - MAKRY GIALOS.
This year despite the economic situation and the demise of Kosmar the village has made a special effort and looks so much more brighter with newly painted accommodation, bars, tavernas and restaurants and lots of new tables and chairs. Of course also with that special Cretan welcome.
The new footpath is especially good for us making Makry Gialos a wheelchair friendly holiday resort for our daughter.Only the odd pole makes for interesting negotiation.
The footpath extends almost the full length of the village and parallel to the beach. It is mostly on the level from the harbour right through. It links with the harbour walk and provides wheelchair access to most shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, many have provided ramps to help. Lots of accommodation is to be found on the ground floor. The other consideration of course is access to toilets although there are very few disabled toilets many bars and restaurants have toilets with good easy access.
This year we also went to the observatory in Agios Stefanos and Karen managed to see the stars from her wheelchair, a great experience.
The return journey was also very good and we will be back soon to see all our friends for another great holiday.

what the people from wales said is absolutely spot on we have been gong to makrygialos for the last 4 holidays and changed to zakynthos when we got our money back due to kosmar ceasing to exist. we are all booked up for zakynthos for 2 weeks in june next year for flights transfers and accommodation its costing us £430 each, would still rather go to makrigialos but there,s no way we can get a deal like that i also checked the accommodation and i think they should stop charging for accommodation at a daily rate but should be discounted for 1 week and more for 2 weeks. if you book a flight with thomsons you can get a coach through them to irapetra for £16 return which is a good help. let,s hope some tour operator takes on makrigialos and SOON!
